Building Permits

Attention Homeowners and Small Businesses. Are you building a deck, adding a sign or putting up a fence? You need a permit!

The City of Riverside requires that most "projects" require a Building Permit. A building permit is necessary to ensure that applicable building codes, as well as zoning codes, are met; ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of the public. A building permit is necessary for construction and accessory structures, including garages, sheds, and fences.

A building permit is NOT necessary for:

  • Minor, non-structural alterations, repairs or changes made to a single-family dwelling with the same material of which the building is constructed, provided that
    • The roof line of the building does not change; or
    • The foundation of the building or structure does not change.
  • The re-roofing of a building which does not cause structural alterations. However, this shall not exempt any person from obtaining a building permit when there shall be structural alterations to the roof.
  • Patios, walks and driveways not more than six (6) inches above grade and not over any basement or story below.
  • "R-1" and "R-2" Districts only: Window awnings supported by an exterior wall when projecting not more than fifty-four (54) inches.
  • Above ground private swimming pools having a water depth of less than three (3) feet.

The Building Official makes the final determination on whether a Building Permit is necessary or not. City Hall encourages all interested persons to contact the Building Official regarding construction at (816) 741-3993.

To obtain a copy of the permit form, see the Document Center in the upper right corner of this page. Simply print it, fill it out and bring it to City Hall during regular business hours - Monday - Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For additional information, please review the Building Permit Application Process Flow Chart to determine what additional steps may be necessary.
