Recycling - good for everyone, FREE for you!
For all single-family Riverside residents, curbside recycling is another FREE service provided for you by the Public Works department of the City of Riverside.
Here's how to recycle.
To ensure proper recycling pickup, please place your recycling bin on the side of your driveway, opposite your trash bin. Recycling should be set out prior to 7:00AM. on each Friday morning (holiday pickup will be one day later, on Saturday).
What holidays does Deffenbaugh recognize?
The holidays when there is no pickup are: New Years Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Your recycling will be collected the following day, on Saturday.
Can I mix items in my recycling tub?
Yes! For easy recycling you can place all recyclable items in one recycling bin. This is referred to as “One Stream Recycling.”
What plastics can I recycle?
Plastic is one of the items filling our landfill. Most of it can be collected at curbside. Look for #1 through # 7 on the bottom of the container. Easily recycled items include milk jugs, liter bottles, shampoo bottles, butter tubs, yogurt cups and laundry containers. Please be considerate and rinse containers and remove caps.
What other items can I recycle?
Other items to recycle include newspapers, magazines, junk mail, office paper, telephone books, manila file folders and catalogs, steel and aluminum cans (no aluminum foil or pie plates please), corrugated cardboard and paperboard (cereal boxes).
What cannot be recycled curbside?
Items that cannot be accepted at this time are glass, plastic bags, motor oil, automotive product bottles, household hazardous waste containers, Styrofoam, hot ashes or cinders, shrub trimmings, yard trimmings, tree trunks or limbs, street sweepings, catch basin mulch, construction materials, appliances, large furniture, nothing with Freon or hazardous waste.
Between what hours does recycling pickup take place?
7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Recycling Provider
The City has contracted with Deffenbaugh Service Company, Inc. to provide you with free curbside recycling. Deffenbaugh can be contacted at (913) 631-3300.
Glass Recycling
The City has partnered with Ripple Glass to provide a glass recycling container on the Municipal Campus, 2950 NW Vivion Road. This container collects brown, green, blue and clear glass food and beverage containers. Please rinse containers but you do not need to remove the labels or separate the glass by color. Paper and Commingled Recycling Containers
The City provides a paper recycling bin and a bin for aluminum, cardboard and plastic on the Municipal Campus, 2950 NW Vivion Road. Catalogs, magazines, newspapers, junk mail, office paper, fax paper, school paper, notebooks and folders can be placed in the paper recycling bin. The commingled recycling bin will accept: aluminum (cans, foil and pans), plastic (#1-7), steel (food cans), cardboard (flattened corrugated, brown paper bags, and paperboard), and phone books
How do I properly dispose of bulky items?
Bulky items, including household furniture and equipment can be taken to Public Works at 4200 N.W. Riverside, Riverside, MO 64150 and disposed of in the appropriate dumpster. Yard waste is no longer accepted at the Public Works facility.
Household Hazardous Waste Collection
The City is a member of the Mid-America Regional Council’s Regional Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program. As a result, Riverside residents can household hazardous waste to permanent collection facilities in Kansas City (4707 Deramus) or Lee’s Summit (2101 SE Hamblin Rd) free of charge with proof of residency. Residents may also drop off HHW products at any mobile collections events held throughout the year. How do I properly dispose of yard waste?
Residents can take yard waste to the Damon Pursell Yardwaste Facility (6105 NW Riverpark Dr., Riverside, Mo, 816-304-3441) to be composted. This service is provided FREE of charge to residents. Regular operating hours are Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. (weather permitting). Please bring your drivers license to verify residency.
