City Pool Closed for Water Treatment

As a reaction and attempted prevention of the recent Cryptosporidium in local swimming pools, the Riverside City Pool will be closed Thursday, September 1 and Friday, September 2 to super-chlorinate the water for cleanliness.  The pool is scheduled to reopen on Saturday for the Labor Day weekend.

What is Cryptosporidiosis:
Cryptosporidiosis (Crypto), a disease caused by the protozoan Cryptosporidium parvum. Cryptosporidium is spread by contact with the stool of infected persons or animals, consumption of contaminated food or water and by person-to-person or animal-to-animal contact.

What are the symptoms of Cryptosporidiosis:
Symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, fever, nausea and vomiting. Symptoms usually develop 2 to 10 days after exposure and may last from 1 to 2 weeks.

Cryptosporidium can still be spread for two weeks after symptoms have subsided.

People affected by diarrhea should not swim for two weeks after symptoms stop. If a member of your household develops any of these symptoms contact your healthcare provider.

Health officials warning:

1. Don’t swim when you have diarrhea. You can spread germs in the water and make other people sick.
2. Don’t swallow the pool water. Avoid getting water in your mouth.
3. Practice good hygiene. Shower with soap before swimming and wash your hands after using the toilet or changing diapers. Germs on your body end up in the water.

Thank you for understanding.
